Understanding Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease: Key Takeaways from the NMS ExBoys UK Seminar
The NMS ExBoys UK Association recently hosted an important online seminar, Understanding Stroke & Cerebrovascular Disease, on 24th June 2023. Led by Mr. Andrew F. Alalade, a highly respected Consultant Neurosurgeon (MBBS, FEBNS, FRCS, NMS/91), the session offered crucial insights into the causes, types, and prevention of strokes.
Here are some of the key highlights:
1. What Is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Immediate treatment is critical to minimise brain damage and potential complications.
2. Causes of Stroke
The seminar discussed several contributing factors, including:
- High blood pressure (the leading cause)
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- High cholesterol levels
- Poor lifestyle habits
Understanding and managing these risk factors is essential for stroke prevention.
3. Types of Stroke
Mr. Alalade detailed the primary types of strokes:
- Ischemic Stroke: Caused by blockages or narrowing of the arteries.
- Hemorrhagic Stroke: Caused by leaking or bursting of a blood vessel.
- Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Often called a mini-stroke, it is a temporary blockage that doesn’t cause permanent damage but serves as a warning.
4. Prevention Strategies
Prevention remains the best approach:
- Maintain a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat options.
- Exercise regularly.
- Control blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake.
- Regular health screenings and check-ups.
5. Raising Awareness
This seminar emphasised the importance of awareness within our community, especially among ExBoys and their families. Early recognition of symptoms like sudden weakness, speech difficulties, or loss of balance can save lives.
